ARCHITECTURE

SAFE = GOOD DESIGN?
An introduction to the nine young design practices, shortlisted for Young Designers 2009, in the Architecture category, gives an insight into what the future holds for the architectural profession.

A STRUCTURE IN THE AIR
Pune-based artha design studio creates an honest structure, keeping multi-dimensionality and flexibility in mind while designing an extension in a farmhouse in rural Maharashtra.

CARVED IN CONCRETE
Surat-based Aangan Architects experiments with materials in its design for a residence, to create a structure as close to nature as possible.

REDEFINING THE CONTEMPORARY
A weekend house by Designedge, a firm based in Pune, aims to offer sensitivity and respect to the natural terrain it is built in.

The entries received in the Interior Architecture category are reviewed against various criteria: Planning, Detailing, Graphics, Lighting, Materials and Colour, leading to an investigation of the importance given to innovation by young practices.

OUTDOOR ARCHITECTURE
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
A comment on the entries received for the Young Designers Award 2009 in the Landscape category, which was renamed as Outdoor Architecture, aptly reflecting the narrowing down of the gap between built forms and soft landscaping.

A SPACE TRANSFORMED
The Young Blossom School premises by Manoj Bhandari Architects, Nashik, reflect the essential characteristics of Outdoor Architecture since it treats the elements of the landscape as an intrinsic and indispensable ingredient of the design.

ADDING 'EXTRA' TO THE 'ORDINARY'
The Swastik Vatika Marriage Party Plot by Vadodra-based Karamvir Ghatge and Associates is developed in a manner neutral enough to receive client-specific decorative add-ons, but simultaneously creates its own focus areas of design interest.

ACCENTUATING THE AXES
By creating a visual marker for a township as well as an open space accessible to its residents, Delhi-based Oasis Designs Inc. has redefined the norm for roundabout design at the Crossings Circle.
