Masterstrokes - The Icon Exhibition

Essar Steel brought to India, for the first time, an exhibition of the works of Pritzker Prize
Laureate, Fumihiko Maki from Japan.

'Masterstrokes', the exhibition has been inspired by the urgent evolutionary activity of India's infrastructure and developed with the ambition to create an exchange platform for local professionals to get a global perspective. The concept of "Masterstrokes" aptly aligns with Essar Steel Ltd.'s focus on the fast-growing Infrastructure and Construction sectors. The alignment between the two allows the demonstration of the innovative usage of steel in architecture and infrastructure. Thus Essar Steel Ltd.'s support for 'Masterstrokes' intends to enable young minds to be exposed to the works of a master architect while the senior members of the community to exchange and develop ideas with great architects.

The Preview

The exhibition commenced at Rang Sharda on 19th March 2009, with a large number of invitees gathering at the venue, eagerly looking forward to the sessions. Sarita Vijayan (Editor & Brand Director, Indian Architect & Builder) welcomed the guests at the exhibition preview and led the evening by introducing the event to the audience. After an inaugural address by Sarita Vijayan, the evening was taken over by the Chief Guests - Mr. Vikram Amin, Mr. Jasu Shah, Ar. Christopher Charles Benninger and Mr. Fumihiko Maki himself.

In his invitation speech, Ar. Christopher Charles Bennigner reminded the audience of the days when his 'guru' Fumihiko Maki taught at Harvard. Maki would appropriately crush down studio projects to teach them about scale and proportion. Later when Maki took over the podium, he recalled his first trip to Mumbai as a step over to meet the famous Le Corbusier at Ahmedabad.

The preview evening was later addressed by Mr. Vikram Amin (Executive Director - Sales & Marketing, Essar Steel Ltd.) followed by lighting of the lamp. Over cocktails and dinner, an exclusive gathering of architects, designers, structural engineers and other distinguished guests from the AEC industry were privy to the exhibition - "Masterstrokes". The guest list, which read like the who's who of the industry, had architects Christopher Charles Benninger, Sen Kapadia, Kapil Gupta, Rahul Gore, Abha Narain Lambah, Romi Khosla, Kamal Malik, Kalhan Matoo, Kapil and Jayashree Bhalla, Nitin Killawala, Ravi Sarangan and P.K. Das among others gracing the occasion.
